ABOUT US
Our Past
In 2002 Yalu Marnggithinyaraw Indigenous Corporation was established as a research hub in Galiwin'ku. Seventeen years later, Yalu rebranded as Yalu Aboriginal Corporation and evolved to deliver grassroots services and programs across Yolŋu communities in East Arnhem Land including, Galiwin'ku, Gapuwiyak, Milingimbi and Raminigining.
Our Present
Yalu Aboriginal Corporation’s vision is to progress the health and wellbeing of Yolŋu in Galiwin'ku by fortifying Yolŋu Walŋa (wellbeing) rom (law), and culture through traditionally appropriate social programs, services, partnerships, and research. Yalu Aboriginal Corporation nurtures and supports Yolŋu cultural practices and language for future generations, encompassing the core values of Yolŋu rom: harmony, sharing & respect. Drawing on the Yolŋu philosophy of interconnections, our programs are delivered through a holistic and connected approach, which has resulted in Yalu being central to Galiwin'ku's development.
At Yalu Aboriginal Corporation, we offer a range of programs and services for our whole community including youth, families and elders. Yalu's programs and services stem from community-identified needs and are underpinned by Yolŋu values and law.
Yalu's objective is to nurture and support Yolŋu cultural practices and language for future generations, encompassing the core values of Yolŋu rom.
We are committed to working under strong transparent governance principles and leadership to deliver Yolŋu-driven, culturally appropriate services and programs with integrity and honesty.
Yalu also conducts community research projects in collaboration with our research partners. Research outcomes inform the design and delivery of the services and programs initiated by Yalu and other organisations within the community. This approach facilitates evidence-based responses to community needs and enables services and programs to evolve as appropriate to suit changing community circumstances.

Our Mission
Yalu Aboriginal Corporation’s vision is to progress the health and wellbeing of Yolŋu in Galiwin'ku by fortifying Yolŋu Walŋa (well-being), rom (law) and culture through traditionally appropriate social programs, partnerships and research.
We are a Yolŋu-driven corporation with placed-based local decision makers.
We are listeners. We are change makers.
We are Yalu Aboriginal Corporation.
Our Community
Kinship (Gurruṯu)
Yalu's staff and partners must always respect Gurruṯu (the Yolngu kinship structure). Gurruṯu is the life source of Yolŋu culture. It flows throughout all Yolŋu culture, practices and protocols. Gurruṯu underpins Yolŋu identity in relation to others and the world around us. Without Gurruṯu, we would have no connection to each other, the land and its stories.
Cultural Protocols and Cultural Integrity
Building strong relationships between Aboriginal and non-indigenous people is important. Yalu champions cultural exchange through our programs and activities, and by engaging with the broader community.
Strong Governance
Yalu is managed by a local Yolŋu Board of Directors and all decision making is Yolŋu-driven and owned. Yolngu and Balanda work together - 'each-one-teaches-one' to continue to strengthen Yolŋu governance while walking in two worlds.
